McArthur Alumni Award
 
Olester Benson ’74
 
 Dr. Olester Benson is a Staff Scientist and Technical Group Leader in the 3M Corporate Research Process Laboratory. He is an alumnus of Eckerd College and a graduate of the University of Colorado at Denver. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Dr. Benson spent 24 years in the United States Army. Since joining 3M in 1988, he has spent his professional career leading research efforts developing environmentally friendly manufacturing process technologies using high-energy radiation and has applied these technologies in the medical, medical diagnostic, safety, traffic control, energy, aerospace, home improvement, semiconductor processing and electronic display industries. He has published articles in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and the Journal of Organic Chemistry; and for his work, he has had 41 U.S. patents issued, with an additional 27 applications pending. He is a member of the 3M Carlton Society, which honors outstanding technical employees, and serves as a volunteer and mentor in the 3M Science Training Encouragement Program (STEP), which recruits, supports and trains promising high school students from underrepresented groups.

Bill "Tex” Curtis ’71 (P ’13)
 
Dr. Bill "Tex” Curtis graduated from Florida Presbyterian College with a B.A. in Mathematics, Psychology and Theatre and went on to earn his M.A. from University of Texas and Ph.D. from Texas Christian University. He is the Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist of CAST Software. Prior to working at CAST, he was the cofounder, Director and Chief Scientist at TeraQuest, a global consultancy that helps companies recognize efficiency and effectiveness gains from their process improvement investments, which was acquired by Borland Software in 2005. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2007 for his contributions to software process improvement and measurement. Over the years, he has co-authored four books and has published in articles with topics ranging from software to business maturity models. He resides in Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife, Janell, and his daughter, Catherine, who is a freshman at Eckerd. Suzanne Armacost Alumni Medal Paul Cheney ’69 Dr. Paul Cheney graduated from Florida Presbyterian College with a B.S. in Physics and went on to earn his Ph.D. from Duke University and his M.D. from Emory University School of Medicine. He helped lead a research effort that studied a localized outbreak of what would eventually be known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Since 1990, Dr. Cheney has headed The Cheney Clinic, which treats patients with CFS. He was a founding Director of the American Association of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a professional association of scientists and clinicians. Most recently, he has been engaged in investigating the cardiac function of CFS patients, using Impedance Cardiography and Doppler Echocardiography. His renowned research and practice rank him as an internationally recognized authority and pioneer in the investigation and treatment of CFS. Over the years, his humanitarian efforts and research have bettered the lives of countless CFS sufferers. He resides in Asheville, North Carolina, with his wife, Holly; son, Christopher; and stepson, Wesley.

Ian Johnson ’89

Mr. Ian P. Johnson is the Vice President of Product Development and Implementation for Pyramis Global Advisors. While at Eckerd, he majored in Economics and Political Science and went on to Boston College to earn his Master of Finance. He was the President of the Eckerd College Alumni Association and then joined the Eckerd College Board of Trustees in 2005, where he is the current Chair of the Investment Committee. In 2000, Mr. Johnson established the Penelope Ellis Memorial Scholarship, in memory of his mother, which is awarded to students majoring in Economics or Political Science. For the last several years, he and his wife, Maureen, have hosted the New England–Area Freshmen Picnic at their home. He resides in Westborough, Massachusetts, with his wife and son, Liam.
Outstanding Young Alumni Award
 
 Jaime Wilke Corvin ’99

Dr. Jaime Wilke Corvin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Health and has a joint appointment in the Department of Community and Family Health at the University of South Florida College of Public Health. After graduating from Eckerd, she received her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. She is a member of the Global Health Council and the Hillsborough County Steps to a Healthier Florida. She has co-authored many publications that highlight the role of culture in public health. Dr. Corvin has conducted health disparities research in Latin America and the Caribbean and has implemented community-based health education campaigns in the Dominican Republic to help combat growing rates of cancer, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. She currently works with underserved Latino populations and has successfully implemented
community-based initiatives targeting cardiovascular health among Latinos, a program addressing breast health among farm workers, and additional health education programs focused on reducing the incidence of chronic disease among underserved populations. She resides in Tampa, Florida, with her husband, Russell, and her one-year-old son.
